Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
The project
SBM delivers a complete marketing campaign across Australia for the conclusion of the epic Skywalker Saga.
The puzzle
Disney entrusted the SBM Design team with the promotion for the Australian marketing campaign for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. As the culmination of an epic nine-film saga, spanning four decades and shattering box office records, this was to be one of THE biggest marketing pushes of all time, rivalled only by the release of Avengers: Endgame a few months prior. Each design would have to maintain the original’s integrity, while compelling local Australian audiences to book tickets and experience the grand finale for themselves.
The solution
After years of working with Disney and the Star Wars brand, SBM understood well the restrictions and brand specifics that needed to be followed. This deep understanding would be instrumental for such a massive project. The SBM team created huge cardboard cutouts to be displayed in cinemas leading up to the film’s release. Large format was also essential for the film’s successful promotion: billboards, tram and bus posters and IMAX stairs. Digital rounded off the whole process, with the team creating social campaigns, web banners and EDMs to spread the word.
The results
Australian cities were covered in advertisements for the film, with audiences regularly engaging with digital and print marketing, and millions of impressions across the life of the campaign. The large standees for the film were seen in theatres across the country. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opened to more than six-million dollars on its first day, making it the sixth most successful film opening in Australian history. The movie made over a billion dollars globally, including more than $30 million in Australia, thanks to a powerful marketing campaign.
