Black Panther
The project
Rare design opportunity sees SBM contribute to the blockbuster success of Marvel’s Black Panther.
The puzzle
Based upon Marvel Comics, the Marvel Cinematic Universe- owned and produced by Disney- is one of the most successful media franchises of all time. Marvel approached SBM’s Design team to create a unique and original campaign for their upcoming film Black Panther, with the focus on creating awareness of the film’s cinema release for a targeted demographic. The campaign was to be unlike any traditional movie poster, specifically crafted to capture the interest of an Australian audience. SBM was to produce printed and animated posters that could be adapted to a range of platforms.
The solution
SBM designed original and unique street posters, digital panels and social media content to promote Black Panther to Australian audiences. This rare opportunity allowed SBM to get creative and use bold vector illustration to create an iconic and versatile product. The posters were to be displayed on urban streets and showcased at the 2018 Laneway Festival, which helped curate the poster’s aesthetics and overall design. The campaign captured the enigmatic and regal vibe of Black Panther as a character, as well as the film’s theme of afro-futurism.
The results
The finished campaign posters promoted Black Panther to millions of people across Melbourne and Sydney, displayed in areas with a heavy foot traffic and dense population. The posters successfully raised awareness of the film, contributing to a massive box office hit that made over $1.3 billion worldwide and smashed multiple records. The bold, distinctive poster design effectively differentiated itself from the more standard movie poster, capturing the attention of the target audience.
